What are balance bikes?
Balance bikes are a new way to teach children how to ride a pedal bike, but how do they work?

The first ever balance bike was ivented by a German inventor called Mr Karl Drais in 1817 and was called the
Velocipede. It was a very strange contraption as it was made entirely of wood and had no practical use.
It had a very small front wheel, a large back wheel and most significantly, no pedals.
This style of bicycle vanished from the face of the Earth, until fairly recently when it was reborn as a tool to
aid young children with gaining balance before they get onto their first pedal bike.
The reasoning for this is that with a balance bike the child learns how to balance first before they learn how
to pedal (and we all know that balance is the key factor when riding a bicycle!), whereas on a traditional
childs bike with stabilisers, the child learns how to pedal first before they ever learn the art of balance.
Balance bikes need to be just the right size for the child so that they can sit comfortably on the bike, but also be able to have both feet reach the ground. This means that the child can effectively walk the bike along whilst they sit on it.
As the child gets more confident they will raise their feet off the ground and let the bike "free wheel" along, whilst balancing. They will then be able to bring the bike to a stop by putting their feet on the ground again.
This means that the child can learn how to balance without the risk of falling off (like on a bigger bike without stabilisers), because as soon as they feel uncomfortable they can simply place their feet on the ground again.
Balance bikes are especially good for younger children (as young as 18 months) as it teaches them necessary skills that they will require when riding a normal pedal bike without gaining any behaviours learned from riding a bike with stabilisers, which then need to be unlearned in order to ride a regular pedal bike successfully.

These balance bikes have been very successful so far so we will be adding to this range of bikes soon.
