Keeping your kids healthy

What can you do to give you kids the best chance in life through a healthy diet and exercise.

When I was a child I was always made to eat my fruit and veg. But I didn't mind because I liked them, unlike many children in the UK.

Ever since I can remember fruit and veg had been a staple part of my diet. Thanks to my mum. She always made sure I had a balanced meal on my plate, and educated me on what I should and should not eat.

I was at a local super market the other day when I over heard someone say "it's too expensive to buy fruit and veg", I looked over and saw an overweight woman with one small child in the trolley seat eating a packet of crisps and two slightly older children running riot.

I looked into her trolly and was amazed at what I saw. Crisps, chips, fatty meats, oil, Chocolate, buiscuits etc... There was not one bit of fresh fruit, veg, or anything healthy in the slightest.

I was shocked, but then I wasn't surprised at how the children were behaving, as having a diet with so much fat and sugar is going to make them hyperactive, and have a low attention span.

I thought about it, and thought that maybe she hasn't been educated on how to look after herself or her family.

I walked on feeling quite sorry for the little ones as they weren't being fed what they need, and was shocked at her statement of it being too expensive to eat fruit and veg as I had just been to the fresh fruit and vegetable section of the store and purchased four pairs, 1Kg of carrots, 1Kg of baking potatoes and a swede for 30p each…. Cheaper than a single bag of the fatty crisps that her child was eating.

If you look hard enough you will always find good deals with fruit and veg.

The early years of your child's life are the most important you need to make sure they get all the nutrients that they need to help them become strong and healthy intelligent adults, as well as educate them on what they need to eat and how much.

What you put in your child's body is so important, and it isn't expensive to eat healthy. Infact it's probably Cheaper.

Exercise is also another really important part of your child's lifestyle. So many children stay in and play on computers all day.

When I was a child I used to go out and play with my friends. We played football, cricket, hide and seek.

It was good fun, and we got lots of exercise. My mum also took us to the park and long walks in the country.

I also did many after school activities, such as ballet, tap dancing and swimming. I loved it and it kept me really fit.

Make sure you check out your local sports centre to see what classes they do for children.

Local parks and country walks are also another good way for you to get out and about and make sure the kids get plenty of exercise.

There are loads of things that you can do. Check out our directory of things to do with the kids.

If you give your children a balanced diet and encourage them do plenty of exercise they will grow to be happy and healthy adults.
